A Walk Home

walk home 01Decides to take some photos of the ’scenery’ that I see when I walk home after work. The photo above is inspired by Chappy after reading her post. My office is in the building at the extreme right. Guess what building is it.

walk home 02The Toa Payoh Swimming Complex is just a few minutes away from office. It’s currently closed till end of August for upgrading works and the coming Asian Youth Games 2009. Singapore is the first to host the Asian Youth Games.

walk home 03Some banners for the Asian Youth Games 2009. The event will be held from 29 June to 7 July.

walk home 04The famous Singapore Table Tennis Association. They helped Singapore achieved silver medals in the Beijing Olympics 2008. However, there’s some issues recently with their ex-coach. Not sure whether the issues are settled now.

walk home 05Toa Payoh Stadium, the home ground of Balestier Khalsa FC. Used to come here for my secondary school’s sport day. Seems like people will still be running round the track even when the soccer team is doing their training in the middle.

walk home 06Took this photo from the overhead bridge. Not very sure with Singapore’s expressway. Think this is the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). Traffic jam is quite often here during the peak hour.

walk home 07An international school. I remembered that there are many different international students in my secondary school, though it’s just a neighbourhood school. Some of the countries I remember are Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, China, Taiwan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Australia.

walk home 08Something I dislike about this is that when you are hanging out your clothes to dry, the unit above  is drying their mop too. Imagine the water from the mop dripping onto your washed clothes. Not sure why people like to place their mop outside even if the mop is dry. I can spot around 6 to 7 units doing this in the photo.

walk home 09There’s a temple nearby, but not sure which religion it belongs to. Miss the temples and shrines in Japan.

walk home 10Boon Tong Kee, which is famous for their chicken rice. Love the chicken rice from this main outlet. I strongly recommend it, but their chicken rice will cost slightly higher than those sold in hawker centers. They also have one outlet in Taipei, Taiwan.

walk home 11The newest eating place in this area, Balestier Market. There are many variety of food there, but I have yet to try any of them. ^^; Previously, this place is one of the oldest market in Singapore called O-Kio (meaning black bridge) Market. I regret that I didn’t take any photos of the old market.

walk home 122-storey shophouses are common along Balestier Road. Some of them are newly renovated and some still remain its old appearance.

walk home 13Electrical cables running above ground are not very common in Singapore as most of them are buried beneath the roads.

walk down 14The new condominium, Pavilion 11. It’s in the final stage of construction and will be occupied soon. All units were sold out and I remember seeing some of the units cost more than S$1 million.

walk home 15There are a lot of construction sites near our house. Around 5 or 6 construction sites and 2 more coming soon. Due to this, our house gets dusty very easily. Remember seeing construction site in Tokyo, which is a bit different from here.

walk home 16These are construction workers from China. The construction workers here are mainly from Bangladesh and China. Every time around 6 plus in the evening, the workers will shout and run towards the bus with a packet of their dinner in hand. Sometimes the bus will parked further from the site, making the workers run more. Is the driver playing tricks on the workers?

walk home 17This black and white house is occupied by some Caucasians. Will see cute kids playing around and adults having picnics or barbecue in some weekends. They seems to be enjoying, which I’m quite envy sometimes.

walk home 18This tall coconut tree is in the grass area of the black and white house. It has the same height as our unit, which is at the eighth storey.

walk home 19Do see one or two kingfishers from time to time here. It reminds me of the old Singapore ten dollar note.

walk home 20This is the nice view that I see from my living room. However, this view of buildings at the CBD area will soon be covered by the new condominium that is under construction now.

These photos will bring back memories when I and my family look through again in the future. I also want to keep record of the changes around me through photo taking. Felt uneasy when taking some of the photos as people are looking at me, but I don’t experience it when I do the same thing in other countries. Maybe I should treat myself as a tourist here.

I don’t quite like Singapore in a way that everybody lives in a pigeon hole unless you’re rich enough to buy a landed property. Other that I don’t mind. ^.^
